To lie
is tell a false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive according to
dictionary.com. It is not permissible to lie under any circumstances. It is not
permissible to lie because the person being lied to cannot make an informed
decision on the matter, it is a basic moral wrong, and nothing good ever comes
from lying.
When
asked a question, you’re much better off answering the question truthfully
rather than with a lie. For example, your college professor calls you John
instead of Jim and you tell the professor they’re correct, they’ll continue to
call you John instead of Jim for the rest of the semester. There is nothing
good about your professor addressing you by the wrong name.
Good
moral character is a major key to life and one of the attributes to good moral
character is to be truthful all the time. A simple example of showing good
moral character and being truthful is to finish all of your weight lifting
exercises even when your trainer is not watching. Truthfully completing your
workout will better yourself physically and morally.
Lying to
the people around you puts those people at a disadvantage because they are
unable to make an educated decision. If I tell my mother my class is over at
3:00 when really it’s over at 3:30, she’s going to show up at 3:00 to pick me
up and then I’m going to have her wait outside.
It is
not permissible to lie under any circumstances.
Thank you for your ideas Robert.
ReplyDeleteSo from what I'm understanding you to say, you're suggesting that it's never permissible to lie, correct? With that said, how would Henry's lie about his identity relate to your argument? Is it still your position that he should not have lied? If so, why?
Moreover, what was going on during that time period that deemed it necessary to lie?
I look forward to your response.
-Prof. Young
Henry's lie came natural to him. He is small, thin, with female characteristics so being a girl isn't a stretch for him. From the beginning Henry should have corrected John Brown. Considering the time period he's in, it is necessary to continue the lie after it had gone on for a couple of days or so. Henry lived a much safer life since he continued the lie.
